What to do — step by step
Safe breakdown routine
- Switch on hazard lights immediately.
- Move the car as far off the road as you safely can.
- Place your warning triangle about 45 metres behind the car.
- Get passengers out on the side away from traffic and wait behind a barrier if there is one.
- Never stand behind or in front of the car on a busy road.
Engine overheating
- Pull over safely and switch off the engine.
- Never open a hot radiator cap — boiling coolant can cause serious burns.
- Wait at least 20 minutes before checking the coolant.
- If the warning returns quickly, call a mechanic instead of driving on.
Tyre blowout at speed
- Do not slam the brakes.
- Hold the steering wheel firmly and keep the car straight.
- Ease off the accelerator and let the car slow down gradually.
- Steer gently onto the shoulder once you are at a low speed.
After an accident
- Check for injuries first and call 193 for an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- Call the police (112 or 191) — MTTD handles road accidents.
- Take photos of the vehicles' positions, damage and number plates.
- Exchange names, phone numbers and insurance details with the other driver.
- Do not admit fault or pay anyone at the scene.
Dead battery
- Turn off lights, radio and air conditioning.
- Use jumper cables only if you know the correct order: red to positive, black to a bare metal point.
- If you are unsure, call a battery or auto electrician service below.
